E-safety
In an increasingly connected world and with an increasing emphasis on Computing in schools it is more important than ever that students, parents and teachers practice e-safety. The following blog will draw on the work of Childnet International and two of its most important e-safety campaigns, “Know IT all” and “KidSMART”, explaining how they aim to keep children, parents and teachers safe.
KidSMART
KidSMART is a resource primarily aimed at students and how they can learn to be safe whilst surfing the internet. The name KidSMART is an acronym for Safe Meeting Accepting Reliable Tell which are pointers that allow children to remember the key rules of e-safety. The website contains a wealth of resources including games, videos, galleries, music, competitions as well as downloadable posters. It also has a section on “net nasties” which has information on cyber-bullying and strangers online. All of the materials are designed to promote safe-searching and its colourful, interactive, child-friendly layout means it is very engaging for this age group. The content is divided further between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 aged children, the former being guided by the adventures of “Smartie the Penguin” and the latter by getting to know Kara, Winston and the SMART Crew. It looks like a fantastic resource and I cannot wait to start using it with my students.

Know IT all
Know IT all is a resource aimed specifically at promoting teachers' and parents' awareness of e-safety and works in tandem with KidSMART. The website has different categories for primary school teachers, secondary school teachers as well as parents. The primary school teacher section includes ideas for lesson plans, colouring in activities involving the characters from KidSMART and other teaching resources. There is also a Teacher and Technology section with a checklist for trainees and NQTs to ensure that as well as keeping their students safe they themselves are practising e-safety too. Know IT all has a plethora of resources and I have already started using it to increase my subject knowledge on e-safety.
